'The Bachelorette' Almost Didn't Air the Late Eric Hill's Departure
by Andy NeuenschwanderThis week, "The Bachelorette" had a big decision to make: How should they handle the departure of a contestant who died after filming?
"Bachelorette" contestant Eric Hill died in a tragic paragliding accident earlier this year, giving a macabre twist to the season. That left the production wondering how much of Hill's departure from the show, which occurred on this week's episode, to show on the air.
The dramatic way in which Eric left the show didn't make things any easier for producers, either. Eric ended up putting Bachelorette Andi Dorfman in tears after confronting her about the way she acted around him, accusing her of being a "TV personality" instead of her real self. As a result, she sent Eric home.
Instead of having a rose ceremony, the "Bachelorette" producers instead had Andi sit down with host Chris Harrison to talk about Eric, the way in which he departed the show, and his untimely death. Andi lamented that she never got to set things right with Eric, saying that it was a "tough pill to swallow."
Harrison also revealed that the show almost didn't air Eric's exit at all, but he and the other producers thought it would be "insensitive" to pretend that it never happened. "We all sat down and watched it and it just didn't feel right whatsoever," he said.
The question is still open as to whether the show will air the footage of the contestants learning about Eric's death. "You can't reshoot that moment," Harrison explains, "so we shot things and captured it not knowing what and if we would use anything."
