'Awkward' Renewed by MTV for Fifth (and Final) Season

'Awkward' Renewed by MTV for Fifth (and Final) Season MTV is putting an end to "Awkward." But not before one more season!

The cable network has given a fifth season order to the high school comedy, but will be ending the show after that final run. The good news is that the fifth and final season will likely be split into two separate runs, so the show might run longer even with a limited number of episodes.

The show has continued to perform reasonably well for the network, but has declined slightly in the fourth season. Season three averaged around 2 million viewers, while the most recent season has dropped to 1.9 million.

Season four is also the first one under new leadership: Lauren Iungerich, who created the show and acted as showrunner for the first three seasons, was replaced by the duo of Mike Chessler and Chris Albergheni.

The change didn't necessarily do the show any favors, as reviewers and fans alike complained that the show bounced between too many half-baked storylines in the fourth season.

However, the show performed well enough to earn a 10-episode back order for the second run of the fourth season. Now, the fifth season will wrap things up.

The end of "Awkward." will also make room for freshman shows like "Happyland" and "Faking It," which start their runs this Fall. The network also has the very popular "Teen Wolf" to lean on once "Awkward." says goodbye.
