'Avengers 2' Might Cast Emily Blunt as Ms. Marvel

We're not going to see "The Avengers 2" for a long time. We still have to go through another wave of Marvel movies that include "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Iron Man 3," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and a "Thor" sequel before Joss Whedon's next team-up movie hits.

So you would think that news about casting for that movie wouldn't be circulating this far in advance. You would be wrong: Emily Blunt ("Looper," "The Five-Year Engagement") and Ruth Wilson ("Luther," "Anna Karenina") are both reportedly being considered for the role of Carol Danvers, aka Ms. Marvel.

Of course this casting news might just be all rumor, but here's why it's plausible: Ms. Marvel is probably not going to get her own movie before appearing in "Avengers 2." As such, she might appear in some of the other superhero films leading up to it as an introduction, such as how Hawkeye appeared in "Thor" and Black Widow appeared in "Iron Man 2." In that case, casting the role now would be important.

Ms. Marvel, in the comics, is a superheroine with alien genes and the ability to fly and absorb and redirect energy, along with being super strong and fast and general superhero-ish. She has been on the Avengers team in the comics in the past, and if she is added to the roster here and kept consistent with her character in the comics, should be about on par with Thor in terms of strength.

Interestingly, Ms. Marvel is an American character, yet two Brits are being considered for the role. Then again, we learned from "Looper" that Blunt can do an American accent just fine.
