Autopsy: Heart Attack Killed Monkees Singer Davy Jones

Autopsy: Heart Attack Killed Monkees Singer Davy Jones Preliminary results indicate that a severe heart attack killed Monkees lead singer Davy Jones Wednesday at the age of 66, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Thursday morning's preliminary autopsy by Martin County (Fla.) Chief Medical Examiner Roger E. Mittleman determined, specifically, that Jones seemingly succumbed to "ventricular fibrillation due to severe coronary atherosclerosis" - an abnormal heart rhythm caused when hardened arteries block blood-flow to the heart.

As is standard procedure, an official cause of death won't be determined until toxicology results come back - often, a four to six-week wait.

As reported yesterday, Jones suffered an apparent heart attack at his Florida home and was later pronounced dead at Martin Memorial Hospital. Before the apparent heart attack, Jones last performed publicly at The B.B. King Blues Club in New York Feb. 19, singing several Monkees favorites such as "Daydream Believer." Judging from fan-shot footage uploaded to YouTube, he appeared to be in fine health less than two weeks before his death.

He's survived by his third wife Jessica and four daughters from his two previous marriages.

Monkees bandmate Micky Dolenz said of Jones, "He was the heart and soul of the show."
