'Arthur' Star Russell Brand Added to 'Rock of Ages' Cast

"Rock of Ages," the movie based on the Broadway musical, has its newest cast member in "Arthur" star Russell Brand.

In a way, it seems an obvious choice: those who saw how Brand used to dress before Katy Perry got hold of him know exactly why he would be considered for a role in a movie about rock and roll in the 1980's.

Brand won't be playing a rocker in the movie per se, though. He's set to play Lonny, the owner of an 80's rock club. In the musical, Lonny acts as a narrator, but it's unclear as to whether or not that will be the case in the movie. Of course, Brand has played a rock star before in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Get Him To The Greek," so if any rocking out is necessary, he's ready for the occasion.

"Rock of Ages," for the un-initiated, will be adapted from the Broadway "jukebox" musical, which features songs from bands like Journey, Styx, Bon Jovi, Poison, and other 1980's rock gods. The current cast includes Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Mary J. Blige, Julianne Hough, Paul Giamatti, and newcomer Diego Gonzalez Boneta.

Director Adam Shankman announced the casting via Twitter, saying "I can officially announce Russell Brand as your Lonny inĀ #rockofagesmovie! I see a mullet in his future...maybe a Nikki Six?" I think he's already mostly there, Adam.
