'Argo' is Number One at the Box Office

Ben Affleck’s critically-acclaimed film, Argo, topped the box office this weekend, earning $12.4 million and more than $60.8 million overall.  This is the first time it has come in number one since its release.

The flick – which Affleck stars in and directs – follows a mission led by C.I.A agent Tony Mendez to rescue six Americans during the 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis.  Enlisting the help of his Hollywood pals, Mendez creates a fake movie to distract the Iranians and get the embassy workers back to the United States.

If you haven’t had a chance to go check it out, you should stop reading this and get there now. This flick will definitely win an award or two come Oscar time. Affleck has literally transformed his actors into spitting images of their real-life alter-egos and with tension building up in every scene, you can’t help but watch on the edge of your seat.

Coming in second in the race to the top of the box office was the mind-bending, time-traveling, what-the-heck-is-happening movie Cloud Atlas, starring Tom Hanks and Halle Berry. It earned $9.6 million, a smaller debut than many thought.  The family flick, Hotel Transylvania, rounded out the top three spots, earning $9.4 million.

It's possible that special events like the World Series (Go Giants!) and an impeding natural disaseter on the East Coast could have played a part in such a low turnout to movie theaters this weekend.
