Apple Announces iPad 3, for Hi-Res Movies on the Go
by Andy NeuenschwanderNeed a new way to watch your favorite movies and shows? You might have avoided viewing epics like, say, "Avatar" on smaller screens like that of the iPad, simply because your TV at home might have a better picture. But those days are over.
Apple has unveiled the new iPad 3, which they're officially calling the "New iPad" to make it seem more... well, new. Among the many updated features of the newest Apple tablet is a "retina" display, much like the one on the iPhone 4S, boasting a very impressive pixel density and thus a sharper, clearer, more high-resolution picture.
In fact, the pixel density of the iPad 3, which stands at 2048x1536, is higher than most 1080p HDTVs, even the top of the line models. In other words, "Avatar" is going to look pretty great on this thing.
Those who prefer to get their movies and TV shows digitally will be happy to know that the new iPad will have 4G connectivity, making streaming of HD shows and movies much faster and smoother. Services like Netflix and HBO Go should run like a dream on this tablet.
Prices for the new tablet will look familiar: the low-end models with Wi-Fi only are priced at $499-$699 depending on the memory you choose, and 4G models are priced at $629-$829.
To take full advantage of the movie and TV-friendly screen on the new device, Apple will also be updating its Apple TV service, which will be available March 16 along with the new iPad.
