Anton Yelchin's Death Ruled Accident, Possibly Caused by Vehicle Flaw

The Los Angeles County coroner has ruled officially that the death of 27-year-old Star Trek Beyond star Anton Yelchin was an accident. The conclusion comes days after Yelchin's death at his home in a freak automobile accident.

Yelchin was discovered early Sunday morning by his friends pinned between his vehicle and a brick pillar outside his home. It appeared that Yelchin had exited vehicle and was pinned when the vehicle rolled into him. The coroner reported the cause of death as "blunt traumatic asphyxia."

The vehicle involved in the accident was a 2015 Jeep Cherokee, a model that's been under a recall because its manufacturer says that it could be subject to "rollaway risk." Speculation holds that the vehicle rolled down Yelchin's steep driveway and pinned the actor between itself and a pillar and a fence.

Yelchin starred in the role of Pavel Chekov in the current Star Trek franchise and is featured in the upcoming Star Trek Beyond, which will be released on July 22.
