Another 'SNL' Alum Joins 'Ghostbusters' Reboot; Dan Akroyd Still Wants to Do True Sequel
by Andy Neuenschwander
The new Ghostbusters might officially have their new manager.
Casting rumors around the production say that "Saturday Night Live" cast member Cecily Strong has been cast in a major role in the "Ghostbusters" reboot. According to reports, Strong will play a manager of sorts for the new all-female team.
It's unclear as to whether Strong's character will be an ally or villain: the reports say that she will support the new Ghostbusters financially, but that she will denounce them publicly in order to keep the general public from panicking about ghosts. The character might also serve as an explanantion as to why people have forgotten about the major paranormal events that happened in New York roughly 25 years ago.
Strong is a recent addition to the "SNL" cast, but has already made some memorable characters including "Girl You Don't Want to Talk To At a Party." Strong also briefly served as a "Weekend Update" anchor.
If cast, Strong will join confirmed cast member Melissa McCarthy. Fellow "SNL" cast members Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon are also being courted to join the cast and fill out the rest of the Ghostbusting team.
Meanwhile, Dan Akroyd has noted that he is still interested in moving forward with his idea for a true sequel to the original two "Ghostbusters" movies, especially if the reboot does well. "There's three drafts of the old concept that exists," Akroyd said. "And we're going to be able to salvage some of it and use it. Yeah, we're gonna be able to use it some day. Let's get this one made and that will reinvigorate the franchise and then we'll go on to maybe doing a more conventional third sequel as we were planning and another idea I have for it."
