Ann Coulter Defends Her Slur
by Shannon KeirnanUgh. “Disgust” doesn’t even begin cover it.
Ann Coulter is eagerly defending her use of the word “retard” in conjunction with President Obama, claiming that it offends no one and saying “screw them” to anyone who has spoken out against its use.
Coulter addresses the issue in depth with Fox News Radio in an interview that is hard to stomach, refusing to apologize and calling critics “liberal bullies.”
In a weak argument Coulter compares the word use to “idiot” or “cretin,” neither of which have the same social sting that the unfortunate “r” word maintains.
Piers Morgan, who recently invited Coulter as his guest, also spoke with Special Olympics CEO Tim Shriver and Special Olympics Virginia Global Messenger John Franklin Stephens on the matter.
Stephens submitted a beautifully crafted open letter to Coulter after the incident, asking Coulter for compassion and understanding.
“After I saw your tweet, I realized you just wanted to belittle the President by linking him to people like me. You assumed that people would understand and accept that being linked to someone like me is an insult… Well, Ms. Coulter, you, and society, need to learn that being compared to people like me should be considered a badge of honor.”
“I do not need to be told this,” Coulter responded.
On “Piers Morgan Tonight,” Stephens added, "The word 'retard' is offensive and I should not be a symbol for someone who is dumb and shallow. If they wanted to use me as a symbol, use me as a symbol for someone who fights adversity.”
Regardless of political affiliation, the “r” word can offend those with special needs, and it offends their friends and family. As the sister of someone with a mental handicap, I encourage you to think before you speak, friends.
