Andrew Garfield Explains His Controversial 'Gay Man' Comments

Andrew Garfield received criticism for recently saying he was living as "a gay man right now just without the physical act."
The actor was discussing how he researched his role as a gay man in the play Angels in America and talked about watching RuPaul's Drag Race with friends. He told BBC's Newsbeat that his comments were "taken out of context" and "twisted."
"That's of course not what I meant at all," said Garfield. "That discussion was about this play and how deeply grateful I am that I get to work on something so profound."
He continued, calling the Tony Kushner play "a love letter to the LGBTQ community." Garfield said, "We were talking about, 'How do you prepare for something so important and so big?' and I was basically saying, 'I dive in as fully as I possibly can.'"
He said his intention in what he said was to speak to his desire to "fully immerse" himself in a culture that he adores. "My only longing is to serve and to keep the world spinning forward for the LGBTQ community in whatever way I'm meant to," said Garfield.
