Amy Schumer's 'Friday Night Lights' Parody is Hilarious, Biting and Basically Just Awesome
by Andy Neuenschwander
You might be asking yourself, "Why did Amy Schumer do a parody of a show that ended years ago?" The answer is amazing.
Last night's episode of "Inside Amy Schumer" featured a sketch that parodied "Friday Night Lights," the much-loved show about high school football in small-town Texas. But the point of the sketch wasn't to poke fun at the show; rather, "FNL" was just a backdrop to make a larger point about rape culture.
Rape jokes aren't easy. The crime itself is so far removed from being a laughing matter that it's one of the toughest topics for comedians to create material around. However, Schumer found the right approach with this sketch, finding a way to denounce rapists and those who ignore their crimes without belittling victims.
In the sketch, Schumer plays the stereotypically wine-guzzling wife of a football coach, who delivers a classic "clear eyes, full hearts" type of speech to his players...only instead of it being about winning games, it's about not raping people.
The questions that the players ask, looking for any kind of loophole, sound ridiculous and provide most of the comedy of the piece (aside from Schumer's ever-growing wine glass). And yet, there's truth behind each joke, making this sketch as important as it is funny.
