Amy Schumer 'People Hate Women'
by Shannon KeirnanAmy Schumer has been everywhere lately, with plenty to say.
The "Bachelorette" nominee (by popular vote) and star of "Inside Amy Schumer" opened up during The Hollywood Reporter's Comedy Actress roundtable, surrounded by other female hard-hitters in the comedy world - Lena Dunham, Tracee Ellis Ross, Ellie Kemper, Gina Rodriguez, and Kate McKinnon.
Sexism in Hollywood became a focus, and Schumer was outspoken on her opinions on why women are treated so differently in the entertainment industry.
"I think people hate women," she said. "I don' think they want to hear a woman talk for too long. A lot of people project their mom yelling at them. My [career] has been about tricking people into listening. I'm not saying all men hate women, but there's such an aggression."
"Girl" star, creator and writer Dunham was quick to support the claim, pointing to the way women are treated on social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram.
"The way women are spoken to in social media is truly shocking. It's how you imagine people screaming at prisoners in Guantanamo."
The panel talked about receiving death threats, threats of violence and rape, and wishes of cancer online, as well as battling Hollywood's image standards.
"I was up for a role and auditioned in character," said Rodriguez. "They're like, 'We love her. But can she come back in with a tight black dress?' I said, 'That doesn't make any sense for the character.' They were like, 'We need to know if you're pretty enough to be on the cover of a magazine."
Dunham added, "I heard a guy say into his microphone, 'I hate this job. I can't wait to be back on a show where there's a man at the helm.'"
"I want women to have all the things," she concludes.
