'American Idol': Watch the Best Auditions of the Season 11 Premiere
by Andy NeuenschwanderLast year, when eventual winner Scotty McCreery gave his initial audition in front of the judges, it seemed pretty clear that he was a favorite in the eyes of the judges and the producers. But did we see anyone like that in the season 11 premiere last night?
In a word, yes.
There were many contestants that walked into the audition room, but a few of them really impressed Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler. Sometimes it was because of their attitude, sometimes it was because of their looks, and sometimes it was because of their amazing voices.
One contestant in particular stood out (and that's why he was saved for the end of the competition), and his name is Phillip Phillips Jr. Despite his humorously silly name, the charming Southern boy wowed the judges with his covers of "Superstition" and "Thriller."
Phillip was the strongest singer of the night, but there were some other auditions that were fun to watch for other reasons. Schyler and Colton Dixon, siblings who auditioned last year, put on a show when the judges demanded that Colton join his sister in auditioning and sent both of them through as a result.
Other contestants used their charm to try to win the judges David Leathers Jr., who was the first contestant of the premiere episode, called himself a ladies' man and managed to get a golden ticket with his singing ability. Things didn't go quite so well for Shaun Kraisman, who was charming and entertaining in his spot-on impersonation of Ryan Seacrest, but fell flat in his actual audition.
