'American Idol': Watch the Best Auditions from Portland
by Andy NeuenschwanderIf we learned anything from "Portlandia," it's that Portland has a lot of hipsters in it. So naturally when "American Idol" came to town, a lot of the contestants tried to look like hipsters, or else the show tried to make them out to be. Despite those shenangians, though, there were a few pretty solid auditioners.
Brittany Zika was one of the early ones, and fell victim to the whole hipster thing. She sang nicely, but Randy told her pretty quickly afterward to take off the funky glasses and hat and just be herself.
Jermaine Jones was an immediate standout to the judges, even before he started singing. That's because he's a freaking giant. He's like eight feet tall or something. But with that height comes a very nice baritone voice... he's a little churchy, which doesn't always play well in this competition, and he has some nerves to get over, but the voice is there.
Romeo Diahn puts all of the other contestants' sob stories to shame: the guy was born in Liberia and had to flee the country and live in a refugee camp for most of his life in order to escape the civil war happening there. So when all these other people complain about their ex-husband being a jerk or that they were bullied in school for a few years, that can shut right up. Romeo's for real. He also sings pretty well, but his rasta style might not translate well in "American Idol." We'll see.
