'American Idol' Season 11, Episode 22 Recap - '1 of 10 Voted Off'
by Andy NeuenschwanderDid you catch that incredibly insipid group performance of "For the Longest Time" at the top of the show? That's just a sample of the entertainment you can expect on the "American Idol" summer tour. Buy your tickets today and get your snappin' fingers ready!
Other performances of the night included Lana Del Rey's appearance, as the singer gave another stand-center-and-deliver rendition of her song "Video Games." It was completely out of place on this stage, which is used to volume above all things... in fact, the audience seemed so hungry for some showing off that they applauded the one high note in the song.
That subdued performance was counterbalanced by Haley Reinhart's performance of her new single, which was mostly sung from inside a cage. Unfortunately for last year's runner-up, her song was a bit upstaged by her leg.
Joe Perry also showed up to play "Happy Birthday" on the guitar for Steven Tyler, with the contestants singing along. Liv Tyler also showed up for this incredibly awkward birthday tribute. Steven topped it off with a rhyme: "I'm a Rip Van Winkle, so I'm told; I'm much too young to be this old." I'm just surprised that he can still put two sentences together.
Thankfully, Elise Testone was safe this week after spending the last two weeks, undeservedly, in the bottom three. It was a good week overall for the ladies, as Hollie was safe as well after a rough performance on Wednesday. The only one of the girls to end up in the bottom three was Erika, who was joined by Heejun.
The luck for the ladies ran out there, though, as Heejun and DeAndre were both sent through and Erika had to sing for a save from the judges. The singer and her new hairdo gave an emotional performance, but despite that and the fact that Steven made his "loving it" face, the judges decided not to use their save.
As usual, the boys have snuck by while a much more deserving girl goes home. The clock might be ticking now for one-trick pony DeAndre, though, as well as for Heejun, whose charm can only take him so far before his voice gets in the way.
Eliminated: Erika Van Pelt
