'American Idol' Runner-Up Katherine McPhee Previews 'Smash' (VIDEO)

'American Idol' Runner-Up Katherine McPhee Previews 'Smash' (VIDEO) Do you like "Glee?" Wish there was a more grown-up version, maybe one not set in a high school? You might be exactly the right kind of audience for NBC's upcoming fall show "Smash."

The people behind "Smash," which include producer Steven Spielberg, have insisted that they're nothing like "Glee." But taking a look at the preview, it's hard to deny that there are "Glee"-like tendencies in play here.

Katherine McPhee, who was a former contestant on "American Idol," showed up on NBC's "The Voice" last night to plug the show. After a quick interview with Carson Daly about the show (in which Katherine noted that she sings Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" on it, a song that had been performed moments ago by Beverly McClellan and Christina herself), McPhee introduced the extended promo.

From what we can gather from the clip, it looks like the show is about a struggling actress with dreams of making it on Broadway. But before she can become a star, she has to get through a rival actress who has been performing on stage for years, and also happens to be a little bit of a diva.

Along with that plot will come lots and lots of music, including "Beautiful," which is sung by McPhee in the clip. Check it out, and let us know what you think: are you excited for "Smash?"
