'American Idol' Former Contestant Michael John Dies Former contestant in American Idol Michael Johns has passed away. His death was due to a blood clot in his ankle.

He was only 35 years old.

The fan favorite appeared on season 7 of the singing competition. His surprising elimination was one of the reasons "Idol" introduced the "judges' save" the following season.

Fox, FremantleMedia North America, 19 Entertatinment, and the team of American Idol released a joint statement:

"Michael Johns was an incredible talent and we are deeply saddened by the news of his passing. He was a part of our American Idol family and he will be truly missed. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Former judge Simon Cowell addressed the tragedy via his Twitter, saying, "I just heard the very sad news that Michael Johns has passed away. A truly great guy. Rest in peace Michael."

Former executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said he was "very upset by the news," while Randy Jackson tweeted: "So Sad. Too soon. Thank you for sharing your talents with us. RIP Michael Johns."

Paula Abdul send out heartfelt condolences to Johns' family via her own Twitter.

Johns' family released a statement Saturday, in which they expressed appreciation for the "outpouring of love and support" they have been receiving, and asked for privacy so they could grieve the loss.
