AMC's 'Turn' Renewed for Surprising Second Season
by Andy NeuenschwanderAMC is staying undercover for one more season.
The network's new drama "Turn" has been renewed for a second season, as announced by a statement from AMC president Charlie Collier. "Craig Silverstein, Barry Josephson and a talented cast and crew delivered a truly distinctive and engaging premiere season. We look forward to continuing this revolutionary journey into season two," he said. "AMC and its creative partners have a track record of nurturing programs we collectively believe in, patiently growing viewership and engagement over time. With 'Turn,' once again, we dive in with our partners to build upon this very promising first season."
The renewal is somewhat of a surprise, as the show has been lackluster in ratings. Over the course of the first season, "Turn" has averaged about 2 million viewers per episode. However, AMC does have a history of giving their dramas a fighting chance: "Breaking Bad" hit a high of 1.5 million viewers in its season one finale, and even in season 4, the show still hovered just below 2 million total viewers per episode.
Still, "Breaking Bad" had much better reviews from critics from the beginning. While "Breaking Bad" started with a 74 on Metacritic and grew to a 99 for its final season, "Turn" is currently sitting at a 61.
But with "Breaking Bad" gone and "Mad Men" ending in 2015, AMC may have to rely heavily on "Turn" to pay the bills, especially with newcomer "Halt and Catch Fire" netting only 1.2 million viewers for its series premiere episode.
At least, it might rely on "Turn" until "Better Call Saul" shows up.
