'The Amazing Spider-Man': What Are the Early Reviews Saying?
by Andy NeuenschwanderOne of the most anticipated movies of the summer, "The Amazing Spider-Man" is drawing a lot of curiosity from fans and industry insiders alike. While the thought of a new Spider-Man movie is always exciting, there's a lot riding on this one, as it might be the quickest reboot turnaround in cinematic history.
In other words, if they're going to reboot Spider-Man so quickly, they'd better make the movie very good, and at least different enough to warrant rehashing the same story.
According to the early reviews, "The Amazing Spider-Man" does just that. According to critic Jordan Mintzer at THR, the new version adds "a whole array of daddy issues" to add new depth to the character of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), and manages to make the romance much more romantic. That shouldn't be too much of a surprise, considering the movie is directed by Marc Webb, who directed "500 Days of Summer."
Mintzer notes that Webb instills a "witty and realistic edge" to the romance between Peter and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), and it certainly doesn't hurt that Garfield and Stone are in a relationship in real life as well. There's no doubt about the chemistry between the two.
Variety lauds the personal stories in the movie as well, and also makes a point of noting just how good some of the action set pieces are. The review calls the reboot "mostly slick" and a "recombination of fresh and familiar elements." You can look forward to a great action sequence on a bridge, as well as POV shots of Spidey swinging through the city, both of which we got a taste of in trailers and clips.
There is only a limited number of reviews thus far on Rotten Tomatoes, with only 11 counted. However, 10 of those are currently positive reviews, and pretty overwhelmingly so. It looks like "The Amazing Spider-Man" could be summer's next "Avengers."
