'Amazing Spider-Man 2' Might Get a Female-Lead Spin-Off...But Which Superheroine Will Get the Gig?

Is Black Cat about to get her own movie?

According to a report from Deadline, Sony is planning another Spider-Man movie in addition to the upcoming Sinister Six sequel...but it won't star Spider-Man. Rather, the movie will feature a yet-to-be-named female superhero.

The obvious choice would be Black Cat, as the character has already made an appearance in the franchise; Felicity Jones played Felicia Hardy (Black Cat's alter ego) in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," though her background was admittedly different from the comics.

Black Cat would also be the heroine most easily inserted into the Spider-Man franchise at this junction. She's half-hero, half-villain, making her an easy tie-in to the Sinister Six as a possible yet not entirely trustworthy ally to Spidey. She's also a potential romantic interest at a point when Gwen Stacy is out of the picture and Mary Jane hasn't made an appearance yet.

However, some are questioning Black Cat's ability to hold up her own movie, and are naming Spider-Woman (who, despite her name, has little connection to Spider-Man) as another option. It's questionable as to whether Spider-Woman would be any more recognizable to general audiences, though.

As of now, the "Sinister Six" movie is set for a November 2016 release, while "Amazing Spider-Man 3" is tentatively scheduled for 2018. The unnamed, female-led spinoff is currently being written by Lisa Joy Nolan ("Burn Notice") and is aiming for a 2017 release.
