Alyson Hannigan Wishes 'How I Met Your Mother' Finale Was Just a Little Different

Alyson Hannigan Wishes 'How I Met Your Mother' Finale Was Just a Little Different Most people who didn't like the "How I Met Your Mother" finale wanted it to be less sad. But star Alyson Hannigan wanted just the opposite!

In a recent interview, Hannigan (who plays Lily on the show) revealed that there was one key shot missing from the "HIMYM" series finale: The Mother's funeral. Apparently there was originally a scene of only just a second or two during Ted's speech that showed him mourning over Tracy's death at her funeral, but the scene was deleted from the final product since it was "just too gut-wrenching."

Hannigan maintains, though, that even though the scene was heartbreaking, it would have helped fans to get on board with the ending. She thinks the moment "would have been better for the audience, so that then they can process, ‘Oh, [Ted] mourned. He got closure’ — and then they’d be happy that [he and Robin] got together," she explained. "Rather than be like, ‘Oh, wait. She died? What? They’re together, huh?’ And credits. That’s what I think was too fast."

It's true that Tracy's death was given only a second or two of attention, leading fans into an accelerated final sequence of the show. But having the funeral scene in there, while showing Ted's closure, wouldn't change the fact that the ending was terribly depressing.

However, Hannigan explains fans' fury at the finale thusly: "You know how if you’re in a relationship and you get dumped, you’d rather be mad at the person? I feel like maybe they’re just like, ‘Well, that’s all right. You sucked anyway!’ That they just want to be mad at us for leaving them. They want to go out, like, angry, because it’s easier for them."

Fans will reportedly get to see an alternate ending when the DVD set comes out later this year. Here's hoping it isn't just the same thing with the funeral added, or we'll really feel dumped.
