'Almost Human' Canceled by Fox After One Season

'Almost Human' Canceled by Fox After One Season Sorry, Karl Urban fans: You're going to have to wait for the next "Star Trek" movie to get your fix.

Fox has canceled "Almost Human" after one season, according to THR. The J.J. Abrams sci-fi series focused on a homicide detective (Urban) in future Los Angeles with a robotic partner who was programmed to be—you guessed it—almost human.

The series started out promising enough when it debuted last November, gaining some traction through an early preview before the official premiere. However, the show dropped over the season to 5.63 million viewers and 1.5 in the demo for the finale, down from 9.2 million and a 3.1 for the series premiere.

The show was liked well enough by critics as well, so you could just chalk this one up to a bad history of sci-fi on Fox. Every sci-fi fan knows the story of "Firefly," the Joss Whedon-created series that was canceled after just one season, only to become a cult hit and spawn a movie, not to mention countless fan protests to try to bring the show back from the dead. Whedon went on to create "Dollhouse" for Fox, which was axed after two seasons.

It's another disappointment for Urban as well, who starred in the critically praised and fan-loved "Dredd," only to see it perform poorly at the box office. Recently, Urban called on fans to stir up some support for a sequel.

Fox, meanwhile, has no lack of shows available to replace "Almost Human," with a number of big-name projects in contention, including the Batman-themed prequel series "Gotham."
