Acting Legend Lauren Bacall Dies
by Shannon KeirnanA sad week.
Monday stunned us with the tragic and unexpected loss of Robin Williams, and now another acting great has left the world - Lauren Bacall has died of a stroke.
She was 89. According to Rober de Klerk, the co-manager of the estate, she suffered no pain.
Born Betty Joan Perske, Bacall, along with husband Humphrey Bogart, were Hollywood legend. She was a 19-year-old fashion model when she was cast alongside Bogart in "To Have and Have Not."
Her husky line, "You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow," made her an instant household name.
The striking young beauty married Bogart (25 years her senior) the following year, and the two starred together in a series of film classics, including "Key Largo," and "The Big Sleep." They remained together until Bogart's death in 1957.
Bacall married another Oscar-winning actor, Jason Robards Jr., in 1961, but the couple divorced in 1969.
While she is most recognized for starring in film-noir, Bacall also practiced brilliant comedic timing, such as in "How to Marry a Millionaire" where she teamed with Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable.
An activist, Bacall also notably opposed the Communist witch hunts of the 1940's and 50's. In 2009, Bacall received an honorary Oscar for representing "the Golden Age of Hollywood."
Talented, memorable, and beautiful until the end, the world will feel the loss of the great Lauren Bacall.
