7 Must-See British Shows to Binge-Watch on Netflix Right Now

There was a small panic earlier this month as it was rumored that a number of BBC shows would be leaving Netflix at the end of January. As it turns out, that's not the case: only "Red Dwarf," "Blackadder," "MI-5" and "Fawlty Towers" are being removed from streaming, and most of the British network's shows are staying.

So if you're looking for something to binge-watch, here are seven top-notch British shows courtesy of BBC, ITV and others that you can and should watch on Netflix right now.

Check the links for more info, including other places to watch (just in case you're not a Netflix person).

1. "Broadchurch"

This crime drama was adapted into a U.S. television series on Fox titled "Gracepoint" that quietly came and went during The Fall 2014 season, but we recommend watching the original. Starring David Tennant, the show centers on a small town that reacts to the murder of an 11-year-old boy.

The mystery will keep you guessing until the final episode, but it's really the drama that erupts as the town is rocked by the tragedy that will make you want to binge-watch this one right away. Watch out for spoilers!

2. "Luther"

The Brits have a way with crime dramas, as illustrated by "Broadchurch" and by this BBC program. "Luther" stars Idris Elba as a self-destructive detective who takes his hunt for murderers to a pscyhological extreme. The show has already been nominated for awards state-side and airs on BBC America.

3. "The IT Crowd"

If the crime dramas are a bit too grim for you, try out this half-hour workplace comedy about technologically savvy but socially inept IT workers. It's the original "The Big Bang Theory" but it's smarter, funnier and infinitely more British.

4. "Sherlock"

With the skyrocketing careers of both Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, we would be surprised if you haven't at least heard of the BBC's modern-day update on Sherlock Holmes. It's clever, it's funny, it's sometimes dark and shocking. If you haven't seen it yet, what are you waiting for?

5. "Peaky Blinders"

This one is new and a Netflix property, so like "Orange is the New Black" and "House of Cards" (the U.S. one, not the British one which could easily also be on this list) you don't have to worry about it disappearing anytime soon. The show stars Cillian Murphy as a member of the Peaky Blinders street gang, who ran the streets of Birmingham, England, in the years following World War I.

6. "The Fall"

Just in case you haven't had enough crime dramas yet, here's another for you. This one stars "The X-Files" star Gillian Anderson as a detective in Northern Ireland pursuing a serial killer. As a bonus, it also stars "Fifty Shades of Grey" hunk Jamie Dornan, for those who want a little eye candy with their murder.

7. "Doctor Who"

Because of course. There's a wealth of episodes of this kooky but heartfelt sci-fi series on Netflix for you to enjoy, spanning years of the series' long run. Since it centers on a time traveller who can go anywhere in space and time with his trusty TARDIS, the tone of the show can vary wildly from one episode to the next. One day you might be watching a futuristic sci-fi epic set many centuries from now with the Doctor and his companion fighting off evil aliens, and another you might be watching a period piece about Queen Victoria...in which the Doctor might still fight off aliens.
