5 Shows to Stream This Week During the Blizzard
by Andy NeuenschwanderAs you may have heard, there's a big ol' storm comin' to the East Coast, and you're bound to be stuck inside for a while with all the snow you'll be getting if you happen to be in that area.
So, what's a person to do if they're stuck inside with a winter storm outside? Answer: make some cocoa, cuddle up under a blanket and binge-watch some shows!
Here are five suggestions of some of the best shows now available streaming online for you to watch this weekend:
1. "Outlander"
This Starz hit tells the story of a woman living in post-WWII Scotland who, due to a series of events, ends up transported back in time to the year 1743. There, she must avoid capture by a particularly brutal band of Redcoats, and avoid too much scrutiny from the band of Highlanders who take her in.
With a strong love story (not to mention very attractive leads), "Outlander" is the perfect show to curl up and watch. Plus, you get the bonus of some truly remarkable costume work and period recreations of Scotland. It might sound very girly to some of the male viewers out there, but this show is brought to you by the same guy who made "Battlestar Galactica," so there's that. Think of it more as sci-fi than romance.
Thus far there's only about a half of a season available streaming on Starz Play, as new episodes are airing now.
2. "Jane the Virgin"
If you watched the Golden Globes, you know why this newcomer needs to be watched. Gina Rodriguez won a Golden Globe for her performance in this show, and considering this is her first big break and there's only been a half season thus far, that's a pretty big accomplishment.
But even if you're not watching to see how good the new breakout star is, this show is charming, funny and reminiscent of the big telenovelas, which makes it all the more fun.
3. "Orphan Black"
Speaking of breakout stars, it's practically a crime that Tatiana Maslany hasn't won an award yet, despite multiple nominations, for her work in this BBC America hit. Maslany stars as a woman who finds out that there are clones of her living out there in the world, and must work with said clones to get to the bottom of a shady scientific venture and earn peace and quiet for her family.
There have been two full seasons thus far (the first is a little better than the second), so you'll have plenty to watch in case the blizzard goes on longer than anticipated.
4. "Broad City"
We can't possibly recommend this Comedy Central half-hour enough. The show stars Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobsen as two girls in New York City who are currently slacking their way through jobs, relationships, and dealing with an annoying boyfriend of a rommate.
Basically, it's about BFFs and it's perfect for anyone who loves comedy, Bed Bath & Beyond, CostCo rotisserie chickens, Oprah or Hannibal Burress. It's a perfect companion piece to "Workaholics," after which it currently airs on Comedy Central.
5. "Broadchurch"
If you're looking for something a little darker, this perfect British crime drama just recently became available on Netflix. When an 11-year-old boy is found dead in a small British costal town where everyone knows everyone, it doesn't take long for townspeople to start turning on each other and uncovering the skeletons in each others' closets. This show spawned a remake on Fox called "Gracepoint," but we suggest you stick with the original.
