5 Hilarious Christmas TV Specials to Watch Streaming Online
by Andy Neuenschwander
Christmas TV specials are a staple of the holiday season, but if you're trying to cut cable it can be hard to find them.
Thankfully, the Internet has your back, as usual.
Thanks to services like Hulu Plus, Netflix and Amazon Prime, you can find all kinds of Christmas specials out there to watch. There are plenty of heartwearming ones that are perfect for the whole family, but what if you're looking for something that'll make you laugh too?
Here are five Christmas specials that'll bring laughter as well as Christmas spirit, all available streaming for free on Amazon Prime, Hulu and Netflix:
From "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" comes this Christmas special featuring the gang from Paddy's Pub. Of course, since this is "Always Sunny," things aren't exactly warm and fuzzy. In fact, it's all pretty twisted.
If you're an Amazon Prime member, you can watch the special for free.
2. "Community"
The little sitcom that could might have finally been canceled by NBC, but there's still a chance for #SixSeasonsandaMovie now that it's on Yahoo!
In its five-season run, "Community" only had a couple of true Christmas specials because of its changing schedule, but those two are some of the best Christmas episodes on TV. "Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas" features the gang as stop-motion characters in Abed's imagination, while the show's "Glee" parody episode "Regional Holiday Music" features the best parody of "Santa Baby" every sung, by the one and only Alison Brie.
Previous seasons of "Community" are all available on Hulu Plus.
3. "RiffTrax Shorts"
The guys who brought you "Mystery Science Theater 3000" are back, and they have their own Christmas special! In "Rifftrax Live: Christmas Shorts-Stravaganza," the guys mock a number of classic Christmas shorts live and in person. It's pretty fun.
You can catch Rifftrax videos, including the Christmas special, on Hulu Plus.
4. "The Office"
In its nine seasons, "The Office" has had plenty of time for Christmas specials. Perhaps none were better than "Christmas Party," the 10th episode of the second season and right in the high point of the Jim/Pam will they/won't they. But there are plenty of others as well, all as awkward and heartwarming as can be.
Netflix and Hulu Plus both carry episodes of "The Office" streaming for free if you're a member.
5. "Extras"
If you have HBO Go, you can watch back episodes of any HBO show. That includes "Extras," a show from Ricky Gervais starring the comedic actor as a version of himself, just starting out in the business and making his way as an extra while trying to sell his own sitcom.
The "Extras" Christmas special is also the series finale, and despite Gervais cynicism, there's a surprising amount of heart. You might just find yourself shedding a tear or two in between Gervais' takedowns of Hollywood and reality TV culture.
