'30 Rock' Star Elaine Stritch Dies at 89: Broadway to Dim Lights in Memorium
by Andy NeuenschwanderElaine Stritch, a Broadway legend and comedic powerhouse, passed away today at the age of 89 at her home in Birmingham, Michigan.
Though the cause of death has not yet been revealed, Stritch battled diabetes for decades and had broken her hip and her pelvis last year in two separate accidents. The actress had just recently moved back to Michigan to be closer to relatives in 2013.
The four-time Tony Award nominee made her Broadway debut back in 1946, but continued to perform on stage all the way up her role in "A Little Night Music" in 2010.
Stritch had a long and award-filled career in television as well, collecting three Emmys for her performances in Law & Order, a televised version of her one-woman show, and in "30 Rock."
It is "30 Rock" for which most of the younger generation would recognize Stritch; she was consistently hilarious opposite Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy's mother Colleen, showing up for occasional guest appearances and stealing the show every time.
With her cutting attitude, biting wit and rough voice, Stritch was a gift to any project she was a part of. Those who have seen the notoriously badly reviewed comedy "Screwed" will know that she somehow managed to outshine even the excellent comedic lineup of Dave Chappelle, Norm MacDonald and Danny DeVito.
Tonight at 7:45pm, Broadway will dim its lights in honor of Stritch and her long career.
