'30 Rock' Season 6, Episode 9 Recap - 'Leap Day'
by Andy NeuenschwanderThe weirdness continues. Last week we saw Jack in a tuxedo and a Batman cape, and this week we see Kenneth in a blue suit, bald cap, and handlebar mustache.
The reason for the getup is the fact that it is Leap Day, which in this universe is a holiday celebrated by all and adored almost as much as Christmas. Everybody wears blue and yellow, and if you don't you get your eye poked and your hair pulled (or your foot stomped and your shin kicked if you're from Boston). It's also customary for someone to dress up as Leap Day Williams and throw candy at crying children. Fun!
Liz had no idea about any of this, but she's a little preoccupied anyway by her old classmate Thad, who is now a multi-billionaire and has been in love with Liz for years. He "Indecent Proposals" her by offering her $20 million to have sex with him. She considers it, but is eventually thwarted by "hot bitches."
Jack, meanwhile, eats some rhubarb leaves (oh yeah, you also eat rhubarb on Leap Day) and gets sick, and has a "Christmas Carol"-type dream with Kenneth showing him Liddy's future if he doesn't spend Leap Day with her... she becomes a LIBERAL!
Tracy has his hands full with a $50,000 gift card to Benihana that expires tomorrow, so his mission is to go through 50 grand's worth of Benihana food in one day. And what better day than Leap Day, the day when nothing counts? Oh yeah, on Leap Day nothing counts. Eventually Tracy decides to feed the poor.
But the best part of this episode is the self-parodizing that Jim Carrey shows up to do. He plays himself as he stars in "Leap Dave Williams," a movie about a man who slowly turns into Leap Day Williams. The result is a mash-up of "The Santa Clause," "Liar Liar," and just about every other goofy family comedy ever, whether it starred Carrey or not. Andie MacDowell also cameos, but who cares about Andie MacDowell, really?
The lasting effect of this episode, though, will be twofold: first, "30 Rock" superfans will wear blue and yellow on Leap Day this year; second, some people just got an idea for a very obscure Halloween costume of Leap Day Williams.
Notes & Quotes:
- "Oh, sir, I never know why"
- "Just dab some scotch on your neck and change your eyes to the color of a winter crystal"
- All this time Tracy has thought that Dot Com is his imaginary friend. Brilliant.
- "They're coming, Liz. Click click. That's their stilettos."
- "Aw dammit! Hot bitches."
