The 10 Best Movies and TV Shows of the Year, According to AFI
by Andy Neuenschwander
Wondering what to see in theaters, rent at home, or watch on TV? The American Film Institute has some suggestions for you.
AFI has released their annual list of the best American movies of the year, and this year must have been a good one for them as the top-10 list is actually a top-11.
Included on the list is a mix of indie and more commercial releases, ranging from obscure to well-known. "Interstellar" is a notable one, especially considering the fact that it was only marginally well reviewed by critics, and even moviegoers seemed to have a pretty divided opinion on it.
"Boyhood," currently the frontrunner for Best Picture at the Oscars, also made the list. The movie is being praised for all of its aspects, though likely some of it has to do with the fact that Richard Linklater filmed the movie over a period of 12 years, using the same actors.
Other, less high-profile films that are nonetheless getting some awards buzz include "Birdman," "Selma" and "Whiplash."
AFI also included a list of the top American television shows of the year, a practice that is new for the institution. Those include big names like "How to Get Away With Murder," "Orange is the New Black" and "Game of Thrones," as well as lesser known shows like "The Americans," "The Knick" and the Amazon original "Transparent."
Since this was a list of only American shows and films, that left some notable titles off the list. Namely, "The Theory of Everything" and possibly "Orphan Black" failed to get recognition because of their respective Britishness and Canadianness.
