Zombies of Mass Destruction is a 2009 horror-comedy film directed by Kevin Hamedani and written by Hamedani and Ramon Isao. The movie follows the residents of Port Gamble, a small island town in the Pacific Northwest, as they are forced to deal with a zombie outbreak that threatens their very existence. The story begins with two gay men, Tom and Lance, arriving at Port Gamble to spend a romantic weekend away from the city. While they are there, they stumble upon a government conspiracy involving biological warfare, which leads to the town being overrun by zombies. Meanwhile, a conservative Mayor, Burton, is running for re-election and decides to use the zombie outbreak to his political advantage by blaming the gay community for the outbreak.
The main protagonists of the movie are Frida, an Iranian-American college student visiting her family in Port Gamble, her boyfriend Conor, a local boy who is struggling to come out to his conservative parents, and her father, Dr. Avondale, who is the only person in town with the medical expertise to figure out how to stop the zombie outbreak.
Each of these characters faces their own challenges throughout the movie, as they try to survive the zombie attack and save their town. Frida is constantly battling against the anti-Muslim sentiment among some of the town's residents, while Conor is struggling to come to terms with his sexuality in a town that is vehemently opposed to homosexuality. Meanwhile, Dr. Avondale is trying to figure out a cure for the zombie virus, while dealing with his own personal demons.
The movie is both terrifying and funny at the same time, with excellent performances from the cast. Janette Armand shines as Frida, bringing both humor and compassion to her character, while Doug Fahl delivers a convincing performance as the conflicted Conor. Cooper Hopkins is fantastic as the malicious Mayor Burton, who stops at nothing to further his political agenda.
One of the strengths of the movie is the way it seamlessly blends horror and comedy. There are plenty of gory, terrifying scenes that will have you jumping out of your seat, but there are also moments of levity that provide a contrast to the violence. The movie is not just a mindless gore-fest â it also has a smart, satirical edge that offers commentary on issues like homophobia, racism, and political corruption.
The movie also has a unique visual style that sets it apart from other horror movies. The use of color and lighting is particularly effective, with the filmmakers creating a moody, atmospheric look that sets the tone for the entire movie. The cinematography is stunning, with each shot carefully crafted to add to the overall ambiance of the film.
Overall, Zombies of Mass Destruction is an excellent horror-comedy that offers scares, laughs, and social commentary in equal measure. With strong performances from the cast, excellent direction, and clever writing, it is a must-see for fans of the genre.
