Zero Focus is a 1961 Japanese suspense-drama film directed by Yoshitaro Nomura, based on the novel by Seicho Matsumoto. The film follows the story of a newlywed couple searching for the truth behind the mysterious disappearance of the groom's first wife. The film starts with the newlywed couple, Teiji and Ayako Sekine, leaving Tokyo to visit the hometown of Teiji's first wife. Though Ayako is apprehensive about the trip, she agrees to accompany her husband. Upon arriving at the small town, they find out that Hisako, Teiji's first wife, has gone missing without any trace. The couple decides to stay in the town and investigate the mystery surrounding the disappearance.

As they dig deeper into the case, they discover that Hisako's past was shrouded in mystery. They meet with old acquaintances of Hisako, including the charming and enigmatic businessman and former lover of Hisako, Mr. Murota, who is at the center of the investigation. Ayako suspects Mr. Murota of foul play in Hisako's disappearance, but as the investigation continues, Ayako herself starts to feel that her husband is hiding something from her.

The film is a classic example of the traditional Japanese mystery-thriller genre, referred to as "Ijime Theaters" or "Bullied Dramas." The movies were popular in the post-war era and often portrayed complex interpersonal relationships amid small-town settings. Zero Focus is no exception, as it takes place in a small and isolated town, where everyone seems to know each other's secrets.

The film's cinematography is also noteworthy, as it perfectly captures the tension and atmosphere of the film's setting. The camera angles are used effectively to portray a sense of unease and suspicion and create a sense of claustrophobia in the small town setting. The use of black and white also adds to the tension, while the haunting score elevates the suspense to another level.

The film's cast is also worth mentioning, as they deliver brilliant and nuanced performances. Yoshiko Kuga shines as Ayako, the smart and determined newlywed who slowly becomes more uncertain about her husband's past. Hizuru Takachiho also gives a convincing performance as Teiji, the seemingly loving husband, hiding his own secrets. Ineko Arima, who plays Mr. Murota's doting wife, brings the perfect balance of charm and ambiguity to his character.

Overall, Zero Focus is an intelligent and engaging thriller that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. The film showcases the masterful storytelling of Seicho Matsumoto and the brilliant direction of Yoshitaro Nomura. The film's themes of trust, betrayal, and loyalty resonate even today, making it a classic film that deserves to be watched and enjoyed by fans of suspense thrillers.
