Yahudi is a 1958 Bollywood film directed by Bimal Roy and starring Sohrab Modi, Dilip Kumar, and Meena Kumari. The movie is set in the Roman Empire era and revolves around the lives of Ezra and Nehemiah, who were Jews and had taken refuge in Palestine. The movie also highlights the love story between a Roman prince named Marcus and a Jewish slave named Hannah.

The movie begins with the arrest of the Jews in a small town in Palestine. Ezra, who is a respected rabbi, is also among them. He advises his people to be patient and have faith in God, despite their suffering. Marcus, the Roman prince, is on his way to Rome after completing his military duties in Palestine. He comes across a group of Jewish prisoners, including Hannah, who is being sold in the slave market. He falls in love with Hannah at first sight and buys her, setting her free from slavery.

When they reach Rome, Marcus introduces Hannah to his mother, the influential Queen Octavia. Queen Octavia is against the relationship and orders Hannah to marry a Roman soldier named Falco. Meanwhile, Ezra and Nehemiah are released from prison and are welcomed by the Jewish community in Rome. They are told about the plight of Hannah and how Marcus rescued her from slavery.

Ezra advises Hannah to marry Falco to save Marcus from being punished for being involved with a Jewish woman. To make matters worse, Marcus is set to marry the daughter of the powerful Roman senator, Publius. Hannah is heartbroken but decides to obey Ezra’s advice. She marries Falco but seeks Marcus’ help when her husband falls sick. Marcus is torn between his love for Hannah and duty towards his family and the Roman Empire.

The movie showcases the struggle of the Jewish community in Rome who are constantly targeted and persecuted by the Roman authorities. Ezra and Nehemiah are on a mission to raise funds to rebuild the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. However, they face opposition from the Roman authorities who are against the Jews. Meanwhile, Marcus’ love for Hannah grows stronger, and he’s willing to give up his wealth, status, and family to be with her.

The movie’s climax sees the Jewish community facing an imminent threat from the Roman emperor. Marcus and Hannah’s love is also at risk because of the royal opposition to their relationship. The movie showcases how the Jewish community comes together and fights for their rights as well as how love conquers all.

The star cast of Yahudi is impressive. Sohrab Modi is brilliant in his portrayal of Ezra. Dilip Kumar, who played the role of Marcus, perfectly portrays the conflict between loyalty to his family and his love for Hannah. Meena Kumari, who played the role of Hannah, is excellent as the innocent and gentle slave who falls in love with a Roman prince.

The movie’s music composed by Shankar Jaikishan is soulful and heartwarming. The song ‘Dil Men Pyar Ka Toofan’ is a classic romantic number that still resonates with music lovers.

Overall, Yahudi is a timeless classic that highlights the issue of discrimination and persecution faced by Jews in the Roman Empire era. It also showcases the power of love and how it can overcome all odds. The movie’s performances, direction, music, and story make it a must-watch for all cinema lovers.
