World Trade Center is a harrowing true story of two courageous men who survived the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. The film features Academy Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage as New York City Port Authority police officer John McLoughlin. McLoughlin and his colleague Officer Will Jimeno, played by Michael Pena, are emergency first responders who get trapped in the debris after the hijacked airplane causes Tower 1 to collapse.
With heart wrenching and disturbing news clips of the historical event weaved into the film, it serves as a powerful reminder of the terror that struck New York and the whole country on that day. The film provokes an emotional punch as bloody and scared survivors scurry from the smoke-filled scene.
A fiery explosion pins McLoughlin, Jimeno and their crew inside the building’s elevator shaft. One of their fellow officers is immediately killed by the falling debris. Another commits suicide to avoid the ongoing pain. As the day unfolds with tears and tirades, McLoughlin and Jimeno bond through their suffering. One especially poignant scene has McLoughlin reciting The Lord’s Prayer for comfort as debris continues to fall.
While the film details the emergencies and explosions at the scene of the terror attacks, it also gives us a glimpse into the lives of the officers’ families. Maria Bello plays McLoughlin’s wife Donna. She is gathered with other officers’ wives as they watch the news footage together. Jimeno’s wife Allison, portrayed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, is pregnant with their second child. She is first notified at work and later waits at home for news regarding her husband’s safety. The two men are eventually found by a former U.S. Marine who travels to the scene to help with the rescue efforts.
This critically acclaimed 2006 film was directed by Academy Award winner Oliver Stone. It is an inspiring story of true survival and courage in the midst of tremendous terror.
