Laura Dern plays the role of her daughter, Ellen. Ellen is a troubled young woman who has landed in prison after a life of drug addiction and prostitution. Despite her mother's efforts to help her, Ellen remains unable to break free from her destructive habits. LaTanya Richardson Jackson rounds out the trio as Carlotta, a hard-edged inmate who is initially hostile to Miriam and Ellen. As she slowly opens up to Miriam and Ellen, Carlotta begins to see the possibility of a future beyond the walls of the prison.
