Within Madness is a psychological thriller from 2015 directed by John Reign, starring Kaci Champion, Jessica Dickerson and Keegan Macy. The movie follows a group of filmmakers as they travel to an abandoned insane asylum to shoot a documentary about its sordid history. Initially, the film crew is excited about the project, but soon they realize that they are not alone in the asylum. As they start to explore the building, they hear strange noises and see disturbing images that hint at a darker, more sinister presence. As they continue to shoot their documentary, they become increasingly paranoid and realize that they might not make it out of the asylum alive.
The movie is shot in a found footage style, with much of the footage coming from the documentary being filmed by the crew. The shaky camera work and use of natural lighting adds to the ambiance and makes the viewer feel as though they are watching real footage rather than a staged movie.
One of the standout performances in the movie is Kaci Champion, who plays Megan, the director of the documentary. Champion gives a convincing portrayal of a woman who is strong and confident at the beginning of the film but becomes more and more frightened as the story progresses. Jessica Dickerson gives a solid performance as the sound technician, Sarah, who is initially skeptical of the paranormal activity but becomes increasingly convinced that there is something sinister at work.
The pacing of the movie is excellent, with the tension building gradually throughout the film until it reaches a fever pitch in the final act. Many scenes are shot in dim lighting or darkness, which adds to the sense of dread and uncertainty that permeates the entire movie.
Within Madness is not a perfect movie, however. Some of the dialogue feels stilted and unnatural, and the film relies too heavily on jump scares to create suspense. Additionally, the ending feels rushed and unsatisfying, leaving the viewer with more questions than answers.
Overall, Within Madness is a solid entry in the found footage horror genre. It's not a perfect movie, but it's well-acted and effectively builds suspense throughout the story. If you're a fan of horror movies, especially those with a found footage style, then Within Madness should be on your to-watch list.
