Wild Man Blues is a 1997 documentary film that follows Woody Allen and his New Orleans jazz band as they embark on a European tour. The film is directed by Barbara Kopple and produced by Letty Aronson, Woody Allen's long-time producer and sister. The film begins with Woody Allen and his band arriving in Venice, Italy to kick off their tour. The band consists of Woody Allen on clarinet, Simon Wettenhall on trumpet, Jerry Zigmont on guitar, Cynthia Sayer on banjo and guitar, and Eddy Davis on banjo and vocals. The film documents the behind-the-scenes preparation for their shows as well as intimate glimpses into their personal lives.

Throughout the film, we see Woody Allen's passion for jazz music and his love for his wife, Soon-Yi Previn. Though their relationship has been controversial in the media due to their significant age gap and the fact that Previn is the adopted daughter of Allen's former partner Mia Farrow, the couple seems to genuinely enjoy each other's company and share a deep appreciation for music.

As the tour progresses, the band travels through several cities in Europe, including Paris, Barcelona, and Rome. We see the band rehearsing, interacting with fans, exploring the cities, and bonding over their shared love of jazz music.

The film also features interviews with members of the band, as well as famous jazz musicians such as Harry Belafonte and Dick Hyman, who share their insights into the state of jazz music in the late 1990s.

One of the standout moments in the film is a scene where Woody Allen is interviewed by a French journalist who asks him about his controversial personal life. Allen gives a candid response, acknowledging that his relationship with Soon-Yi Previn is unconventional but emphasizing that they are both consenting adults who love each other.

Overall, Wild Man Blues is an intimate and entertaining look at Woody Allen's life on and off stage. Though the film was made over 20 years ago, it still feels relevant today as it explores themes such as love, music, and the complexities of personal relationships. Whether you're a fan of jazz music or Woody Allen's work, this film is definitely worth checking out.
