Wild Flowers is a lovely and touching film from 1989 that explores the complex relationships between three generations of women. Set in the stunning Scottish countryside and filmed with a painterly eye for natural beauty, the movie is a delight for the senses and the emotions. The main character of the film is Mairi (played by the wonderful Colette O'Neil), an elderly but feisty woman who lives alone in a remote cottage surrounded by flowers and animals. Mairi is a wise and compassionate person who has lived through many tragedies and struggles, including the death of her husband and her son in World War II. Despite her hardships, however, Mairi remains optimistic and curious about life, and she loves to talk to the ghosts of her past, including her long-dead mother and father.

One day, Mairi receives a surprise visitor in the form of her granddaughter Fiona (Beatie Edney), a troubled young woman who has just been released from prison for drug dealing. Fiona is a rebellious and angry person who resents her family for abandoning her and blames them for her problems. However, as she spends more time with Mairi, Fiona begins to realize the depth of her grandmother's love and wisdom, and she opens up to her about her past and her fears. Mairi, in turn, listens to Fiona with compassion and understanding, and helps her to see that there is still hope for her.

The relationship between Mairi and Fiona is the heart of the film, and it is beautifully portrayed by O'Neil and Edney, who have a wonderful chemistry and a natural charm. Their conversations are full of warmth and humor, but also of pain and regret, as they try to come to terms with their past and their identity. Mairi tells Fiona about her own youth, when she fell in love with a soldier and had to leave her family to follow him to war, and how she survived by her wits and her courage. Fiona, in turn, tells Mairi about her addiction to drugs, and how she felt lost and alone in the world, until she met a kind-hearted woman who took her in and showed her love.

The third character in the film is Andrew (Stevan Rimkus), a young man who works as a gardener for Mairi and who becomes a love interest for Fiona. Andrew is a gentle and sensitive person who shares Mairi's love for flowers and nature, and who helps Fiona to see the beauty in the world. Their romance is tender and sweet, and adds a touch of hope and optimism to the film.

Wild Flowers is a film about family, love, and forgiveness, and it is told with a gentle and poetic touch. The Scottish landscape is a character in itself, and the cinematography captures its beauty and its magic. The soundtrack, which features traditional Scottish music and songs, adds a haunting and melancholic tone to the story, and brings out the emotional depth of the characters.

Overall, Wild Flowers is a gem of a film that deserves more recognition and love. It is a testament to the power of cinema to touch our hearts and souls, and to remind us of the things that truly matter in life: love, family, and the beauty of the natural world.
