Why Did You Pick On Me? is a 1980 Italian comedy film directed by Michele Lupo and starring Bud Spencer, Cary Guffey, and Ferruccio Amendola. The movie tells the story of a ten-year-old boy named Billy (Guffey) who is constantly bullied at school by his classmates. One day, he is rescued by a tough cop named Jerry (Spencer), who becomes his new friend and mentor. Together, they embark on a series of misadventures that will lead them to uncover a sinister plot involving a corrupt businessman named Louie (Amendola) and his gang of thugs.
The film opens with a scene in which Billy, a shy and introverted boy, is being humiliated by his classmates during a game of baseball. He is picked last for the team and is mocked for his awkwardness and lack of skills. After the game, he is cornered by a group of bullies who steal his lunch money and destroy his bicycle. Feeling helpless and alone, Billy wanders through the city streets and comes across Jerry, a burly cop who is on a stakeout. Jerry takes pity on the boy and offers to help him out. He takes Billy to a diner and buys him a meal, and they strike up a friendship.
Over the next few days, Jerry spends time with Billy and teaches him how to stand up for himself. He shows him some basic self-defense moves and gives him some advice on how to deal with bullies. Billy's newfound confidence begins to attract the attention of his classmates, who are surprised by his transformation. However, their admiration is short-lived, as Louie and his gang of thugs start to threaten both Billy and Jerry.
Louie is a local businessman who owns a construction company and has connections to the police department. He is involved in a scheme to defraud the city by using substandard materials in the construction of a new highway. When Jerry starts to investigate Louie's activities, he and Billy become targets of Louie's wrath. They are pursued by his henchmen and are involved in a series of chases and fights.
The film's climax takes place at a construction site, where Louie and his men are in the final stages of their operation. Jerry and Billy sneak onto the site and, after a chaotic confrontation, manage to foil Louie's plan and bring him to justice. The film ends with Jerry and Billy riding away on a motorcycle, with Billy holding onto Jerry's back and wearing a big grin.
Why Did You Pick On Me? is a lighthearted film that combines elements of comedy, action, and drama. It tackles the issue of bullying in a humorous and entertaining way while also highlighting the importance of self-confidence and standing up for oneself. The relationship between Jerry and Billy is the heart of the movie, and Spencer and Guffey have great chemistry on screen. Amendola, as the main villain, is suitably menacing, and his scenes provide a good dose of tension.
The film's pacing is brisk, and the action scenes are well-handled. Lupo's direction is solid, and he manages to balance the various elements of the movie effectively. The script, by Marcello Fondato and Ingrid Denhm, is witty and engaging, with some memorable one-liners.
Overall, Why Did You Pick On Me? is an enjoyable movie that will appeal to fans of the buddy-cop genre and anyone who has ever been bullied. It may not be a cinematic masterpiece, but it is a lot of fun and has a positive message at its core. If you are looking for a feel-good movie that will leave you smiling, this is a good choice.
