We the Party is a 2012 American comedy-drama film directed and written by Mario Van Peebles. The movie stars some of the most prominent figures in the entertainment industry, including Snoop Dogg, Michael Jai White, and Mario Van Peebles himself. The plot of the movie centers around a group of teenagers about to graduate from high school, and their struggles as they navigate their way through adolescence.
The movie is set in Los Angeles, specifically in an upper-class neighborhood called Baldwin Hills. The main character of the film is a teenage boy named Hendrix, played by Mandela Van Peebles, the son of the director. Hendrix is the son of a popular radio personality by the name Ray, played by Mario Van Peebles. Ray is tough on his son and constantly pushes him to excel in academics and sports, all in the hopes of securing a scholarship for college.
Hendrix doesn't have many friends at school, except for his group of misfit friends, all of whom are trying to get their lives together before they graduate. They all belong to different cliques in school but come together to form a "crew", consisting of Berkeley, Socrates, Reggae, and the only girl in the group, Rhapsody, played by Simone Battle.
As the end of the school year approaches, the crew decides to throw a massive party - an event that they hope will allow them to let loose and celebrate their achievements, even if those achievements aren't necessarily academically focused. The party becomes the focal point of the movie, with various sub-plots and story arcs developing throughout the evening.
One of the most significant sub-plots involves a romance between Hendrix and a beautiful girl named Cheyenne, played by Snoop Dogg's daughter, Cori B. Cheyenne is the daughter of a wealthy man who runs an upscale club in the city. She and Hendrix have been friends for a while, but the night of the party is the first time they both recognize their feelings for one another.
Another sub-plot focuses on the relationship between Hendrix's parents. Ray and his wife, played by Vanessa Bell Calloway, are on the verge of a divorce. Ray is focused on his career and ignoring his family, while his wife feels neglected and wants him to be more involved in their son's life.
Additionally, there is a tense rivalry between Hendrix's crew and another group of students, known as the "N-Poets." The two groups are at odds throughout the movie, culminating in a rap battle that takes place during the party.
Overall, We the Party is an insightful and honest take on the struggles and experiences of young people coming of age. The film is packed with humor, drama, and a few poignant moments that will stick with audiences long after the credits roll. Snoop Dogg and Michael Jai White both provide excellent performances that add depth to their respective characters, while the younger actors hold their own and deliver some memorable scenes. If you're looking for a coming-of-age movie with heart and soul, We the Party is definitely one to watch.
