'Wazir' is a 2016 Indian crime thriller movie directed by Bejoy Nambiar and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The movie features Amitabh Bachchan, Farhan Akhtar, Aditi Rao Hydari, and John Abraham in key roles. It was a highly anticipated movie as Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar were coming together for the first time on the big screen.
The story of 'Wazir' revolves around a wheelchair-bound chess grandmaster named Pandit Omkar Nath Dhar, who is played by Amitabh Bachchan. Dhar has lost his speech and his wife in a tragic accident and is now living a lonely life. One day, he meets Danish Ali, a cop played by Farhan Akhtar, who is going through a difficult phase in his life after the death of his daughter.
Danish starts investigating a terrorist organization that has been targeting politicians in the city. During his investigation, he stumbles upon a bigger conspiracy involving a powerful minister, Izaad Qureshi, played by Manav Kaul. When Danish tries to expose the truth, he becomes the target of the terrorists, and his family is put in danger. Seeking help, he turns to his only trustworthy ally, Dhar.
Dhar, who has been watching Danish's life from a distance, agrees to help him. Together, they start playing chess, and Dhar starts guiding Danish through his moves. As they move forward in their journey to unravel the truth, they discover that there is a 'wazir' or a hidden pawn who is controlling the game from behind the scenes.
Apart from the primary plot, there is also a subplot involving Dhar's daughter, played by Aditi Rao Hydari, who is a dancer. She is pursued by a powerful politician, who is trying to control her, and her father's chess moves have a considerable impact on her life too.
The movie is visually stunning, and the direction is impeccable. The cinematography by Sanu Varghese creates a haunting and eerie atmosphere, especially during the scenes involving the terrorists. There is also a touch of surrealism present in the movie, which adds to its overall aesthetic appeal.
The performances by the lead actors are top-notch. Amitabh Bachchan steals the show with his subtle and nuanced performance as the chess master. He brings depth and meaning to every scene, and his chemistry with Farhan Akhtar is terrific. Farhan Akhtar, on the other hand, is superb as the cop who is struggling to come to terms with the loss of his daughter. His character's journey is filled with pain, and he portrays it with great finesse.
Aditi Rao Hydari is excellent in her role, and her dance sequences are nothing short of breathtaking. John Abraham also makes a brief appearance in the movie, and his performance is good too.
The music by Shantanu Moitra is another highlight of the movie. The songs 'Tere Bin' and 'Khel Khel Mein' are soulful and beautifully composed. The background score by Rohit Kulkarni also adds to the overall impact of the movie.
