Wasteland is a British thriller movie from 2012 that follows the story of three young men who embark on a journey of revenge and redemption in the aftermath of a tragic and senseless crime that affects them all in different ways. The lead character of the movie is Harvey (Luke Treadaway), a young photographer who witnesses the brutal murder of his friend and fellow street artist, Mark (Iwan Rheon). Struggling to cope with the traumatic event, Harvey turns to his two close friends, Dodd (Matthew Lewis) and Charlie (Gerard Kearns), for support.
As the three of them try to come to terms with Mark's death, they begin to investigate the circumstances surrounding the murder and soon find themselves on a dangerous and violent quest for justice. Their search for the killer takes them into the dark underbelly of London's criminal underworld, where they encounter ruthless gangsters and corrupt police officers, all of whom are determined to stop them from discovering the truth.
Along the way, the trio are aided by a determined young social worker named Michelle (Vanessa Kirby), who becomes a romantic interest for Harvey. Michelle is also instrumental in helping the boys reconnect with their past and confront the personal demons that have been holding them back.
The movie is set against the backdrop of London's vibrant street art scene, and features some breathtaking visuals of the city's urban landscape. It also has a pulsating soundtrack that perfectly captures the edgy, rebellious spirit of the characters.
The acting is superb throughout, with standout performances from Vanessa Kirby, Timothy Spall (who plays the boys' alcoholic mentor, Harvey's father), and Iwan Rheon (who appears in flashbacks as Mark). Luke Treadaway brings a quiet intensity to the role of Harvey, while Matthew Lewis and Gerard Kearns both imbue their characters with a believable mix of vulnerability and toughness.
Writer-director Rowan Athale does an excellent job of balancing the movie's various themes - friendship, revenge, redemption, and self-discovery - while keeping the pace brisk and the tension high. There are several clever plot twists along the way that will keep you guessing until the very end.
Wasteland is a compelling and emotionally powerful movie that explores the complex bonds of friendship and the lengths to which people will go to protect those they love.
