Warlock is a 1989 horror film that follows the story of an evil Warlock who is transported from the 17th century to modern-day Los Angeles. The movie is directed by Steve Miner and stars Julian Sands, Lori Singer, and Richard E. Grant in lead roles. The movie begins in the 17th century when the Warlock (Julian Sands) is sentenced to death by the church for practicing black magic. Just before his execution, the Warlock is transported through time and space to modern-day Los Angeles. The Warlock needs to retrieve the Grand Grimoire, a book of spells that contains the true name of God.
Upon arriving in Los Angeles, the Warlock attempts to find the Grand Grimoire but is also pursued by a witch hunter named Giles Redferne (Richard E. Grant) who has also been transported through time to capture the Warlock before he can unleash his evil upon the world. The Warlock befriends a woman named Kassandra (Lori Singer) and enlists her help in retrieving the Grand Grimoire.
As the Warlock and Kassandra search for the Grand Grimoire, Giles Redferne is hot on their trail. Along the way, the Warlock unleashes his evil powers on the unsuspecting people of Los Angeles. He steals a woman's beauty, unleashes a rain of toads, and causes an entire street to be swallowed up by the earth.
The Warlock eventually retrieves the Grand Grimoire, and Giles and Kassandra must team up to stop him before he can use it to unleash his ultimate evil upon the world. The climax of the movie takes place in a deserted graveyard, where Kassandra and Giles confront the Warlock in a final showdown that will decide the fate of the world.
Throughout the movie, Julian Sands delivers a standout performance as the Warlock. He exudes an undeniable sense of power and malice that makes him a truly terrifying villain. Richard E. Grant also does an excellent job as Giles Redferne, the witch hunter who will stop at nothing to catch the Warlock.
Lori Singer, who plays Kassandra, is perhaps the weakest link in the cast. Her performance is adequate, but she lacks the depth and complexity of the other two leads. Despite this, she still manages to hold her own in several scenes and serves as an important ally to both Giles and the Warlock.
The special effects in the movie are also noteworthy, especially considering the movie's age. The Warlock's use of magic to unleash destruction on Los Angeles looks surprisingly impressive for a movie made in 1989. The makeup and prosthetics used to create the Warlock's aging appearance when he enters modern-day Los Angeles are also very well done.
Overall, Warlock is an entertaining horror movie that features excellent performances from its leads, impressive special effects, and a thrilling plot filled with twists and turns. Though it may not be the scariest horror movie out there, it still manages to deliver plenty of thrills and chills that will leave you on the edge of your seat.
Warlock is a 1988 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 43 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.2 and a MetaScore of 44.
