"War-Gods of the Deep" is a science-fiction thriller movie released in 1965, directed by Jacques Tourneur and produced by Samuel Z. Arkoff, under the American International Pictures banner. The movie features an incredibly talented cast including Vincent Price, Tab Hunter, and David Tomlinson. The plot of the movie revolves around a young couple, Jill Tregillis (Susan Hart) and her lover, Ben Harris (Tab Hunter), who live near a Cornish coast of England. One day, while riding a horse, Jill is mysteriously pulled under the sea. Ben, who happened to be nearby, saves her life, and together they are met with a strange underwater city that is ruled by the War-god, the tyrant, and the king of Atlantis, known as the "Pharaoh" (Vincent Price).
Throughout the entire movie, the audience learns in increments the history of the underwater city, the people that live within it, and the state of the War-god's tyranny. Ben, Jill, and the Pharaoh team up to try and take down the War-god and Gorgon (John Le Mesurier), his right-hand man, in order to bring peace to the underwater city.
The movie's narrative is one of the most impressive things about it, consistently moving the plot forward in a way that maintains a high level of intrigue and suspense. Tourneur does an excellent job of creating a dark, foreboding atmosphere within the underwater world, while also paying attention to the little details that make the city and its inhabitants unique.
The acting in "War-Gods of the Deep" is also noteworthy. Vincent Price, who often played villains, steals the show with his portrayal of the Pharaoh. He is able to deliver the proper amount of menace and sophistication, which helps cement him as one of the genre's most iconic villains. Tab Hunter and Susan Hart play their roles quite well, with Hart's portrayal of Jill being one of the standout performances in the movie.
Additionally, the visual effects of "War-Gods of the Deep" were quite impressive, for their time. The underwater city is elaborate and detailed, with impressive costume design for the creatures and characters that dwell within. A lot of the special effects were practical, which helped to create a more immersive experience.
One of the more impressive aspects of the movie is its ability to blend different genres together. There are elements of science-fiction, horror, and even romance throughout the movie, which help to create a more well-rounded and engaging experience.
Overall, "War-Gods of the Deep" is a must-watch for fans of the genre. Its strong narrative, impressive visual effects, and phenomenal performances make it a standout movie from the 1960s.
