"Walk Like a Panther" is a hilarious British comedy movie that was released in 2018, directed by Dan Cadan, and stars an ensemble cast of talented actors, including Stephen Graham, Jason Flemyng, Julian Sands, and numerous others. The film tells a story about a group of retired wrestlers who come back to the ring to save their local pub from being shut down by their greedy landlord.
The movie is set in a northern English town called Bradford and centers around the local wrestling team called the "Panthers." The team used to have a huge following and was a significant part of the town's culture during the '70s and '80s. However, as time passed, the popularity of wrestling declined, and the team disbanded, and its members moved on with their lives.
The story begins by introducing the Panthers, who are all portrayed as loveable, ageing misfits. They live their lives in the town, reminiscing about their past glory days, and they are proud of their achievements. However, their lives are turned upside down when they learn that the landlord of their local pub, the "Cooperman," is planning to turn it into a trendy gastropub that doesn't reflect the authentic spirit of the local culture. The Panthers decide to take matters into their own hands, and rally together to save the pub from being destroyed.
The idea of the former wrestlers reclaiming their glory days by going back into the ring and organizing a wrestling match comes from the son of one of the Panthers, Mark Bolton (played excellently by Stephen Graham). Mark is a failed wrestler himself and wants to use this opportunity to prove his worth to his father, Trevor (played by Dave Johns). The team comes together with a renewed sense of purpose and passion, and they put their skills and wrestling tactics to the test as they work tirelessly to create a successful event.
The movie has a great sense of humor and fun, and it's especially endearing because of the eccentric and lovable characters. The actors are uniformly excellent, and their comedic timing hits all the right notes. Stephen Graham, in particular, is excellent as Mark, the group's organizer, who is trying to prove himself to be a worthy successor to his father's wrestling legacy. Jason Flemyng is also noteworthy as "Dresser," the ex-strongman of the team, who's now an undertaker and takes things a little too seriously.
On the other hand, Julian Sands plays the character of a mysterious spy who gets involved with the wrestlers' plan in a surprising way, adding an element of intrigue and tension to the story. He is all dressed up in a black suit and is far more serious than the rest of the characters, but he still fits perfectly into the quirky world of "Walk Like a Panther."
Along the way, the Panthers' mission is hindered by various obstacles, including the team's declining fitness levels, the corporate interests of the town's mayor, and the scheming of the pub's landlord, Tracy (played by Jill Halfpenny). However, the team is undeterred and determined to save their beloved pub, and they work furiously to create a show that will capture the spirit of their past glory days.
Overall, "Walk Like a Panther" is a heart-warming, comedic gem that's not to be missed. It's an ode to aging and the memories that we cherish, a celebration of the unique northern English culture, and a fun tribute to the world of professional wrestling. The film is full of laugh-out-loud moments, catchy music, and a lot of heart, making it a perfect choice for a feel-good movie night.
