Vivah is a Bollywood movie that debuted in 2006. The movie stars Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao and is directed by Sooraj R. Barjatya. The film also features Anupam Kher in a pivotal role. The movie presents a romantic tale about Poonam (played by Amrita Rao) and Prem (Shahid Kapoor). Poonam is a lovely, simple, and shy girl who lives with her parents in a small town in Uttar Pradesh. Prem, on the other hand, is a hardworking young man who runs a successful business with his brother's help.
Poonam's father, Harishchandra (Anupam Kher), is in search of a suitable match for his beloved daughter. When he finds a perfect match for her, he arranges the wedding. However, due to some unforeseen circumstances, the groom's family cancels the wedding. Harishchandra worries about his daughter's future as she is now "unmarried" and will find it tough to get a suitable match.
The only solution to this problem appears to be an arranged marriage with Prem, and Harishchandra asks Prem and his family to consider Poonam as their future bride. Initially, Prem's mother is hesitant about the proposal, but eventually agrees to visit Poonam's family.
When Prem reaches Poonam's house, he is awestruck by her beauty and simplicity. Her kindness and unassuming nature are a breath of fresh air to him. Both of them gradually develop a bond as they get to know each other, and their love gradually blossoms.
However, the path to their love is not an easy one. Poonam's sister-in-law, Bhavna (Alok Nath's daughter-in-law Vinodhini), creates problems and creates misunderstandings between the two. Bhavna's motive is money, as she is jealous that her husband's family has promised to give a large amount of money in dowry to Poonam's family, and she is not receiving anything from her in-laws.
The movie's central theme is arranged marriage, wherein, in Indian society, parents find a suitable match for their children. However, it also sends out the message that arranged marriages can also be successful if the couple gets lucky in finding the right families and partners.
The film's dialogues evoke nostalgia about Indian culture and traditions, which can be observed in a few scenes, such as the engagement ceremony, Haldi function, and Mehndi function. The film highlights Indian values like family, love, respect for elders, and mutual respect among family members.
The film has beautiful songs, some of which are sung by Udit Narayan, Shreya Ghoshal, Kumar Sanu, and Alka Yagnik. Songs include "Mujhe Haq Hai," "Do Anjaane Ajnabi," "Chup Chup Ke," "Milan Abhi Aadha Adhura," and "O Jiji."
Shahid Kapoor delivers a great performance in Vivah, and his on-screen chemistry with Amrita Rao is impeccable. Amrita Rao also impresses with her acting skills and appears as a natural in a simple yet complicated role. Anupam Kher as Poonam's father delivers a solid performance as usual, albeit in a more somber role.
Overall, Vivah is a beautiful romantic movie that captures the essence of Indian values and the beauty of arranged marriages. The movie is wholesome family entertainment and delivers an emotionally fulfilling experience.
