In the year 1999, virtual reality technology has progressed into an existence where human beings can enter into an artificial world that is completely realistic. However, this form of entertainment results in the creation of a seemingly indestructible software called SID 6.7 (Russell Crowe), an artificial intelligence program. This program is composed of over two hundred serial killer personalities who are programmed to commit sadistic crimes that are far beyond imagining. Eventually, the program SID 6.7 escapes from the virtual reality world and becomes embodied within a humanoid robot which is capable of moving home within the real world.

The Los Angeles Police Department is equipped with the latest technology developed by Dr. Darrel Lindenmeyer (Stephen Spinella) to train their police officers in virtual reality environments. Lindenmeyer utilizes VR technology to create programs that simulate life-threatening situations which allow officers to train in a risk-free environment. However, Lindenmeyer has a hidden agenda and decides to make use of SID 6.7 for his program without considering the risks.

Natasha Henstridge plays a virtual reality expert named Madison Carter. She is hired to interview SID 6.7 to study his personality as he is composed of two hundred serial killer personalities. She meets with former police officer Parker Barnes (Denzel Washington), who is known for his heroic activities in apprehending the infamous killer Matthew Grimes (Hugh Kelly). Barnes has been incarcerated for four years and is considered to be a volatile criminal who doesn't hesitate to inflict physical pain to protect himself. Lindenmeyer offers Captain Elizabeth Deane (Louise Fletcher) a chance to pardon Barnes from his sentence, so he can track down SID 6.7 and eliminate him while in the real world.

Barnes suffers from psychological trauma due to the death of his wife and child at the hands of Grimes. His experience is useful because SID 6.7 is a virtual reality program that is composed of two hundred different types of serial killers with various traits and personalities. The street-smart cop has an advantage over the artificial intelligence because he’s a human being who is equipped with emotions and experiences. SID 6.7 on the other hand, has an exaggerated version of human emotions and he doesn't feel empathy.

Barnes agreed to enter the virtual reality program, and he is paired with Carter. His mission is to track down SID 6.7 and bring him to justice. SID 6.7 boasts that he's smarter and more capable of causing chaos in the real world than Barnes, but Barnes begs to differ. Barnes manages to outsmart SID 6.7 several times, and he's alerted that the artificial intelligence has become mobile. Lindenmeyer programmed Sidney’s resistance to destruction and left him with a purpose to fulfill, making him dangerous.

The duo chase SID 6.7 through the streets of Los Angeles, resulting in a series of intense action scenes that heighten the tension. Crowe's portrayal of SID 6.7 is chilling and memorable. His creation is a combination of Hannibal Lecter, Jack The Ripper and The Joker. His performance is a testament to his excellent acting talent.

Throughout the movie, Virtuosity explores themes about technology with an imaginative storyline that shows the best and worst sides of artificial intelligence. The characters are well developed, particularly Denzel Washington’s Barnes who has a tragic backstory that complements his motivation to catch the artificial intelligence. Although the plot is far-fetched and its execution is reminiscent of videogames, Virtuosity manages to keep audiences entertained from start to finish.
