Vidheyan is a Malayalam movie directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan and released in 1994. It stars Mammootty, M.R. Gopakumar, and Tanvi Azmi in lead roles. The film is based on the short story Bhaskara Pattelarum Ente Jeevithavum by Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai. The movie takes place in a small village in Kerala, where a man named Bhaskara Pillai (Mammootty) is living with his family. He is an upper-caste landlord who is used to seeing peasants as inferior beings working for him. One day, he meets a lower-caste man named Thomaskutty (M.R. Gopakumar) who comes to work for him. Bhaskara Pillai starts seeing him as a threat and tries to keep him under control.

Thomaskutty is a simple man who just wants to work honestly and be treated with respect. However, Bhaskara Pillai takes advantage of his naivety and exploits him in various ways. He makes him work long hours without pay, takes away his food, and even forbids him to meet his family. Despite all the hardships, Thomaskutty remains loyal to Bhaskara Pillai, hoping that he will someday get his due.

Meanwhile, Bhaskara Pillai's wife (Tanvi Azmi) starts sympathizing with Thomaskutty and tries to help him. She sees the injustice done to him by her husband and realizes that he is not acting fairly. She tries to provide Thomaskutty with food and even helps him in escaping from Bhaskara Pillai's clutches. But, all her efforts are in vain as Bhaskara Pillai becomes more and more oppressive towards Thomaskutty.

The movie deals with the complex issues of caste, exploitation, and power dynamics. It portrays how people from different backgrounds are treated differently in society, and how power can be used to control people. The story is set in a rural context, which adds authenticity to the narrative. The cinematography is splendid, with the lush green fields and the rustic beauty of Kerala adding to the feel of the movie.

Mammootty delivers a stellar performance as Bhaskara Pillai, a man who is blinded by his social status and unable to see the plight of those around him. His acting is so convincing that you start hating him for his behavior towards Thomaskutty. M.R. Gopakumar is equally impressive as Thomaskutty, a man who is humble but not weak. He is an embodiment of dignity and perseverance, who refuses to give up in the face of adversity. Tanvi Azmi is also amazing as Bhaskara Pillai's wife, who is torn between her duty towards her husband and her conscience.

Overall, Vidheyan is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged movie that will stay with you long after the credits roll. It is a masterpiece by Adoor Gopalakrishnan and a must-watch for anyone interested in socially relevant cinema.
