Vehicle 19 is a 2013 action-thriller film directed by Mukunda Michael Dewil and stars Paul Walker as Michael Woods, an ex-con who accidentally picks up the wrong rental car at the airport in Johannesburg, South Africa. Unbeknownst to him, the car is filled with evidence and keys to a major corruption scandal that goes all the way to the top.
As Michael drives away from the airport, he begins to realize that something is not quite right with the car. It seems to have a mind of its own, with doors that lock and unlock and windows that roll up and down on their own. As he tries to figure out what's going on, he discovers a gun, a phone, and a GPS device hidden in the glove compartment.
Things take a turn for the worse when he receives a call from a mysterious woman named Rachel (Naima McLean), who tells him that she's a U.S. Embassy worker and that he's in grave danger. She urges him to park the car immediately and wait for her, but Michael is skeptical and decides to keep driving. He soon realizes that Rachel is not who she claims to be and that the people who are after him will stop at nothing to get the car back.
As Michael races through the streets of Johannesburg, he is pursued by corrupt cops and ruthless gangsters, all of whom seem to be after the same thing. He must use all of his skills and knowledge to evade his pursuers and uncover the truth behind the scandal before it's too late.
Along the way, Michael meets a taxi driver named John (Gys de Villiers) who becomes his unlikely ally. John knows the city like the back of his hand and proves to be a valuable asset in Michael's quest to stay alive. Together, they navigate the harsh streets of Johannesburg and outwit their would-be captors in a thrilling chase across the city.
What sets Vehicle 19 apart from other action-thrillers is its unique premise and setting. The film takes place entirely in Johannesburg, a city that is rarely seen on screen, and offers a grim portrait of life in South Africa, where corruption and violence are rampant. The film also explores themes of redemption and second chances, as Michael tries to rebuild his life after a stint in prison.
Paul Walker delivers a solid performance as Michael Woods, bringing his trademark charisma and intensity to the role. He convincingly portrays a man who is caught up in a dangerous situation and must rely on his wits to survive. Naima McLean also shines as Rachel, adding a layer of mystery and intrigue to the film. Gys de Villiers provides comic relief as John, bringing much-needed levity to the tense proceedings.
Director Mukunda Michael Dewil does an excellent job of ratcheting up the tension and keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. The film's breathtaking car chases and shootouts are expertly staged and choreographed, making for a thrilling and visceral viewing experience.
Overall, Vehicle 19 is a solid addition to the action-thriller genre and a testament to Paul Walker's talents as an actor. It's a gripping, high-octane ride that will keep you guessing until the very end.
