Vatel is a 2000 film based on the life of François Vatel, a 17th chef from France. The film is set in 1671 and follows Vatel, played by Gérard Depardieu, before the Franco-Dutch War. King Loius XIV visits for a 3 day festival and Vatel is the master of the festivities held at Prince de Condé's home. The prince wants to impress King Louis XIV and goes to great lengths and spends a great amount of money to do so.

Vatel is tasked with many things which are dishonorable, and being a man of great virtue and honor, he must stride through the tasks to show his superior, the prince, that he can do so while holding on to his values and dignity. Vatel falls in love with a woman whom he is not meant to be with due to the social structure of the time, and upon realizing that he is nothing more that a pawn to the prince and others above him, he decides to take a drastic measure to end the film.

Vatel is a 2000 history movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 43 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.6 and a MetaScore of 44.
